In planning the next steps of how to further improve living conditions for the people of Mirebalais, and recently added earthquake refugees, GCA has been able to work with both the mayor of Mirebalais and US volunteers to develop a plan to house the homeless. What resulted was the plan for the next project for GCA entitled 'New Town, Mirebalais'.
New Town, Mirebalais will be a collection of homes available to Haitians in Mirebalais free of charge that will provide shelter and sanitation. As well, farming land will be available surrounding the collection of homes for residents to begin growing crops to use as a source of food and to be able to sell. The mayor of Mirebalais has given GCA a large plot of land to use for the development of New Town, Mirebalais, and will be working with GCA and US volunteers (city planners, architects, etc.) to help ensure that New Town, Mirebalais, can be used most efficiently to impact lives in Haiti.
The first phase of New Town, Mirebalais, will include four blocks of temporary housing (camping tents) and will eventually move to a second phase of transitional housing (tarp houses) and finally permenant housing (container houses). By first implementing temporary housing and then moving on to permenant housing we can begin providing shelter much quicker. The target occupancy of New Town, Mirebalais, will be 5,000 Haitians.
